Writing Contest: A Girl in Waiting - Venkat Panchavati

A Girl In Waiting (The Banana Tree)

The girl was born and grew up in serene surroundings. She grew under the shade of her extended family which was like a tree protecting her giving the shelter and the warmth she needed. She had lots of green memories and the odd dry sticky events in her life which made it very interesting.

She was growing older now with the dryness showing in her external appearance. She would become green again and start flowering when she gets her wishes fulfilled.

When she looked out, she could see all the people moving about so calm like a river. She always had big hopes when she saw in the distance. The sun's ray shone down everyday bringing with it the freshness and energy to this river of people who moved quietly.

When She looked across she saw hoardes of people living so peacefully next to each other like trees in a forest. They were all so different to each other and still had no problem living amongst each other. She lost herself daily watching them for their peacefulness and sharing.

She dreamt amongst this vast expanse of this earth, her man would come down like a prince one day. He may come through the forest, braving his way through the thick of the jungle. When he does cross the forest, he would be pleased to see the safe steps leading him to his lady in waiting. There will be people like a river across him and her, but still she would be able to see him coming. Her man will cross this river of people to reach her and ask for her hand.

She at times dreamt what would happen if things go wrong. She knew everything will not be the same again. The calm and quiet river of people would turn into warriors roaring creating a storm. The people across who were peaceful neighbours like trees in a forest would sway and kill each other by falling upon each other. This would all be created by strong emotions which would no longer would be a breeze like now. That will be a hurricane crossing the land she lived.

Will she straighten up if something happened like this. Well, Hope. She only thought, now her man have to come with more bravery and strength. He has to push and find his way through the river of people like rowing a boat in a storm. He has to brave the strong gust of wind if he comes across the forest and may not even find the safe steps to reach her. But still she would have seen her man across. She would no longer wish to be here under the protection of her family, instead would break and slide down among the river of the people. She was sure she can float over the
warriors in front of her who would be kind enough to her. She would reach for the man across and give herself in happiness to be taken away to a distant land.
